Dental anxiety

How we help with anxiety
Extra time. Let us know when you book your appointment that you feel anxious. We will then schedule more time, so there is no rush.
Talking first. Your first visit can simply be an introduction: we discuss what makes you anxious and what you have experienced before. No treatment is needed at that stage.
Explanation beforehand. Before we do anything, we tell you what we are going to do and what you may feel or hear. Nothing happens unexpectedly.
A stop signal. We agree on a signal, for example raising your hand. If you give that signal, we stop immediately.
Building up gradually. We start with small, simple treatments, so you can build confidence before anything bigger happens.
Not been to the dentist for years?
You are very welcome, without judgement. At your first appointment, we get to know each other, take a calm look in your mouth and take X-rays if needed. We then discuss what is going on and make a plan together, starting with what matters most, such as complaints or pain. You help decide the pace at which we continue.
When extra help is needed
For some people, the anxiety is so severe that treatment in a regular practice is not possible. In that case, we refer you to the Stichting Bijzondere Tandheelkunde (SBT, centre for special dental care) in the ACTA building, Gustav Mahlerlaan 3004, 1081 LA Amsterdam, where dentists and psychologists work together on your anxiety. Afterwards, you can often return to us for regular care.
Frequently asked questions
I haven’t been to the dentist for years – can I still come?
Yes, you are very welcome, even if it has been a very long time. There is nothing to be ashamed of: we do not judge anyone. At your first appointment, we get to know each other calmly, look at what is going on and make a plan together at a pace that suits you.
How do you treat patients with dental anxiety?
We schedule extra time, first discuss what makes you anxious and explain beforehand what we are going to do. You get a stop signal, and we build up treatments gradually from small to larger. Let us know when booking that you feel anxious, and we will take this into account. Some patients find it helpful to listen to music during treatment.
Can I take a break during treatment?
Yes. Before treatment, we agree on a stop signal, for example raising your hand. If you give that signal, we stop immediately and only continue when you are ready.
Is anaesthetic always possible?
For almost all treatments that may be uncomfortable, we can numb the tooth or gums with a local anaesthetic. We wait until the anaesthetic is working properly before we start. If you still feel something, just tell us: we can give more anaesthetic.
Can I bring someone to my appointment?
Yes, you can bring someone you trust, such as a partner, family member or friend. This person may come with you into the treatment room. Just let us know when you book your appointment.
