Emergencies

What counts as an emergency?
Call us urgently in case of: severe pain that does not go away with a painkiller, swelling in the mouth or a swollen cheek, an accident in which a tooth has broken, come loose or been knocked out, bleeding after an extraction that does not stop, or severe difficulty swallowing.
Go directly to the out-of-hours GP service (huisartsenpost) or call 112 if a swelling grows quickly or spreads towards the eye or neck, if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or if you have a high fever and feel very unwell.
Emergencies during opening hours
Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00: call +31 (0)20 358 6966 and choose the emergency option in the phone menu. We discuss your symptoms and, if necessary, schedule an appointment the same day.
Emergencies outside opening hours
Mondzorgpoli Slotervaart, Louwesweg 6K, 1066 EC Amsterdam. Phone: 0900 1515. Always call before you go. Calling the 0900 number costs €1.50 per call. Then contact us on the next working day so we can complete your treatment.
Costs
An emergency consultation is charged as a problem-focused consultation according to the national tariffs, plus any treatment. In 2026, an emergency consultation costs from €60.02; the dentist discusses the costs of any treatment with you beforehand. For children under 18, this is covered by basic health insurance; for adults, often by supplementary insurance. Outside opening hours, the Mondzorgpoli may charge a surcharge.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I have severe toothache outside opening hours?
Take a painkiller such as paracetamol according to the package leaflet and call the Mondzorgpoli Slotervaart on 0900 1515. Do not put aspirin on your gums, as this damages the gum tissue. Then call us on the next working day.
Can I come to you for an emergency if I am not a patient?
Yes, even if you are not registered with us, you can call during opening hours. We will help you if we have capacity, on the condition that you then register with us as a patient. Outside opening hours, anyone can go to the Mondzorgpoli Slotervaart.
What should I do if a tooth has been knocked out?
For a permanent tooth: hold the tooth by the crown and do not touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly under cold running water and try to gently put it back in place. If that is not possible, store the tooth in milk and call immediately – the sooner you are treated, the greater the chance of saving the tooth. A knocked-out baby tooth is not put back, but do have your child checked.
What should I do if my cheek is swollen?
Call us as soon as possible; a swollen cheek often indicates an infection that needs treatment. Cool the cheek from the outside; do not apply heat. If the swelling grows quickly, spreads towards the eye or neck, or you have difficulty swallowing or breathing or a high fever, call the out-of-hours GP service or 112 immediately.
How much does an emergency consultation cost?
An emergency consultation costs from €60.02 according to the national tariffs, plus any treatment; the dentist discusses those costs with you beforehand. For children under 18, this is covered by basic health insurance; for adults, supplementary insurance often reimburses part of the costs.
