When is a crown or bridge needed?
A crown is often needed when a tooth is so badly damaged or contains so much filling material that an ordinary filling no longer provides enough support, after root canal treatment of a back tooth, or when a tooth is broken. A bridge is an option when a tooth is missing and the neighbouring teeth are strong enough to support it. As an alternative to a bridge, we also discuss an implant.
What does the treatment involve?
At the first appointment, the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic and we take a digital scan. You receive a temporary crown. The dental laboratory then makes the final crown or bridge, which we fix in place at the second appointment, about two weeks later. We work with various materials, such as glass ceramic (lithium disilicate), zirconia and sometimes gold.
Costs and insurance
The costs consist of the dentist’s fee and the laboratory costs. A crown costs approximately €550 to €950. You receive a cost estimate in advance; our overview of laboratory costs is on the Frequently asked questions page. For adults, crowns and bridges are not covered by basic health insurance; supplementary policies often reimburse part of the costs.
